AIEQ WELCOMES AGREEMENT IN PRINCIPLE ON HYDROELECTRIC PRODUCTION IN LABRADOR
Montreal, December 12, 2024 - The Association de l'industrie électrique du Québec (AIEQ) applauds Hydro-Québec's announcement today of an agreement in principle for hydroelectric generation in Labrador. The agreement renews access to Churchill Falls generation while adding new generating capacity.
This agreement, which guarantees Quebec access to a minimum of 7,200 MW for the next 50 years - and at a lower price than any other renewable option in North America - represents a major step forward for Quebec's energy transition and prosperity.
" This historic agreement marks a decisive step towards decarbonizing the Quebec economy, and meets the growing need for renewable energy to electrify and decarbonize Quebec. By securing a sustainable and affordable supply for decades to come, Quebec is consolidating its position as a leader in energy transition and the green economy. We would like to take this opportunity to underline the masterful work of Mr. Sabia's team in this matter, " says Alain Sayegh, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the AIEQ.
With an average cost of 6 cents/kWh, this agreement ensures that Quebec has reliable and affordable renewable energy, while maintaining competitive rates for households and businesses. The addition of 9,190 MW of total generating capacity, including 7,200 MW for Quebec, consolidates Quebec's position as a world leader in the energy transition.
" This strategic agreement is excellent news for the entire energy ecosystem. It highlights the importance of the entire industry, including Quebec manufacturers, SMEs and service companies, working together on this vast long-term project to guarantee energy security and stimulate major investments in renewable infrastructure with a very low carbon footprint. We also applaud Hydro-Québec's inclusive approach with its Aboriginal partners, which reinforces a sustainable and equitable vision for all, " adds Marie Lapointe, President and CEO of AIEQ.
